What Password Manager to Use in 2023

THE EDITOR’S PICK: Bitwarden

Update Dec 23, 2022: There have been a lot of scrutinities aroound Lastpass with the recent hack. In most cases, I don’t recommend it but it worth the mention in this post.

1. Bitwarden: One of the key advantages of Bitwarden is that it is open-source and free to use. This means that anyone can access the source code and verify that it is secure and does not contain any vulnerabilities. Here is their recent SOC 2 audit report. It is also available on a wide range of platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android, making it a convenient option for users with multiple devices. I strongly recommend Bitwarden as it is a solid password manager that offers many of the same features as other popular password managers, but is available for free. It is a good option for users who are looking for an open-source and secure password manager.

2. 1Password: 1Password is another popular password manager that offers many of the same features as LastPass. It has a password generator, can automatically fill in your login information, and uses encryption to protect your passwords. 1Password is great for Enterprise use (but it doesn’t mean you cannot use it for personal and family use).
   July 11th, 2023. IMPORTANT NOTE: If privacy is something you care about, it was reported that 1Password has tracking and telemetry 1 2. Not that this would be a deal breaker in my opinion but this is something to keep in mind, and I still recommend it if Bitwarden isn’t intuitive to you.

3. Dashlane: Dashlane is a password manager that offers a number of advanced features, including the ability to securely share passwords with others and access to a virtual private network (VPN) for added security. It also has a password generator and can automatically fill in your login information.

4. KeePass: KeePass is an open-source password manager that is free to use. It allows you to store all of your passwords in one secure location, and it has a password generator to help you create strong, unique passwords. It also has a number of advanced features for more advanced users. The sellout of KeepPass, it is portable. Which means you can store the database on a portable memory stick.
   But the downside is you must make sure you don’t lose that portable storage drive.

5. LastPass: This used to be my favorite but because of the user policy changes introduced about a year ago, it was against what I believe in and support. Although, worth to mention their auto fill feature is the best compared to the other listed above.
